Rettungssport ist die Wettkampfvariante des Rettungsschwimmens. Gute Rettungssportler sind auch gute Rettungsschwimmer. Das Training f\u00fcr den Sport hilft, im Ernstfall Leben retten zu k\u00f6nnen. Doch auch der sportliche Aspekt spielt eine gewichtige Rolle. Rettungssport fordert den kompletten Athleten: Kraft, Kondition, Schnelligkeit und die technisch saubere Beherrschung der verschiedenen Rettungsger\u00e4te sind Voraussetzung, um im Wettkampf konkurrenzf\u00e4hig zu sein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hallensport in Europa<\/strong>
In den verschiedenen Disziplinen des Rettungssports spiegeln sich die Traditionslinien dieses vielseitigen Sports wider, der zum einen in Europa und zum anderen in Australien, Neuseeland, S\u00fcdafrika und den USA begr\u00fcndet wurde. In Europa \u2013 mit seinen zahlreichen Frei- und Hallenb\u00e4dern \u2013 wurden Wettk\u00e4mpfe der Rettungsschwimmer zun\u00e4chst in der Schwimmhalle ausgetragen. Wie in den reinen Schwimmwettk\u00e4mpfen messen sich die Athleten in den Hallendisziplinen oder Pool-Events untereinander im Wettlauf gegen die Uhr. Das wichtigste Sportger\u00e4t ist eine genormte Puppe, die die zu rettende Person simuliert. Flossen und der Gurtretter, ein spezielles Rettungsger\u00e4t, kommen bei einigen Disziplinen als Erg\u00e4nzung hinzu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Import aus \u00dcbersee: die Freigew\u00e4sser-Disziplinen<\/strong>
In \u00dcbersee entstanden an den langen Str\u00e4nden des Pazifiks, Atlantiks und Indischen Ozeans vor allem Wettk\u00e4mpfe im offenen Meer. Diese sogenannten Freigew\u00e4sser-Disziplinen oder Ocean-Events leiten sich aus den Alltagsanforderungen an die Rettungsschwimmer im Kampf mit Wellen und Brandung ab. Neben den schwimmerischen F\u00e4higkeiten erfordern sie auch den sicheren technischen Umgang mit einer Vielzahl an Hilfsmitteln. Rettungsbretter, Rettungskajaks und Gurtretter m\u00fcssen einzeln oder in Kombination beherrscht werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Freigew\u00e4sser werden keine Zeiten genommen, hier z\u00e4hlt alleine die Reihenfolge des Zieleinlaufs \u00fcber das Weiterkommen in den Vorl\u00e4ufen oder \u00fcber Sieg und Niederlage. Besonders in Australien und Neuseeland genie\u00dft der Freigew\u00e4sser-Rettungssport hohe Popularit\u00e4t und zieht zu den nationalen Meisterschaften und Wettbewerben tausende Zuschauer an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seit den 1990er Jahren hat sich der Freigew\u00e4sser-Sport auch in Europa und Deutschland etabliert. Zugleich wendeten sich die klassischen Freigew\u00e4sser-Nationen auch den Wettbewerben in der Schwimmhalle zu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In der DLRG betreiben in Deutschland mehr als 60.000 \u2013 zumeist junge \u2013 Menschen den Rettungssport. Viele Jugendliche wurden durch ihn bereits f\u00fcr den Einsatz im Wasserrettungsdienst an Deutschlands K\u00fcsten und Badestellen im Binnenland begeistert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Rettungsschwimmen geh\u00f6rt zum Programm der World Games, der Weltspiele der nicht-olympischen
